Welcome to

There could be pirates, shipwrecks and mutinies to cope with while at sea, but was daily life on the oceans always brutal? Not at all.

Living on a large sailing ship in the 19th century could be civilized, exciting and fun. Wives and families sometimes accompanied sea captains and cooks on voyages. Children learned their school lessons and played on deck. Crews sang sea shanties to pass the time and their songs and expressions became popular enough to live on in modern cultures and languages. Trade opened up distant lands and exposed Maritimers to exotic foreign countries and goods.
