There could be pirates, shipwrecks and mutinies to cope with while at
sea, but was daily life on the oceans always brutal? Not at all. Living
on a large sailing ship in the 19th century could be civilized, exciting
and fun. Wives and families sometimes accompanied sea captains and cooks
on voyages. Children learned their school lessons and played on deck.
Crews sang sea shanties to pass the time and their songs and expressions
became popular enough to live on in modern cultures and languages. Trade
opened up distant lands and exposed Maritimers to exotic foreign
